Welcome to Ash Class! Year 1 is one of the most exciting and challenging transitions children face and one of our key aims for this year is to help children become independent learners. In our class we recognise the need to preserve the best of Foundation Stage practice whilst embracing the expectations of the Key Stage 1 curriculum. This will enable children to be motivated, enthusiastic and successful learners.

The adults in our class are:

· Mrs Brinicombe (class teacher)

· Mrs Bell and  Mrs Richardson

Throughout the year, children learn through an exciting range of topics, from learning about the Woods, to Local History, to Traditional Tales and the work of famous artists. These topics are used in conjunction with core and foundation subjects to make learning both fun and meaningful.

At the end of Year 1 the children complete a Phonics Screening Check which the Department for Education defines as a short “light-touch” assessment designed to confirm whether individual children have learnt sufficient phonic decoding and blending skills to an appropriate standard. We support your child with daily phonics lessons that are delivered using the Read Write Inc. programme.

Year 1 is a place we hope your child will feel safe and secure and where we will value and nurture their unique, God-given gifts.
