Welcome to Oak class (Year 5) at Maryport Church of England Primary School. During Year 5 we will build on the learning from previous years whilst presenting children with challenges. We intend to deliver a knowledge-rich curriculum, through imaginative and cross curricular learning, to provide opportunities for children to Learn, Achieve and Shine.
In Year 5 we will be studying Brazil, the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, with school trips to the Lake District Wildlife Park in the Autumn term and a residential to Edinburgh in the Summer term. We regularly reflect on the Christian Values, which are focused on explicitly through our Collective Worship time and throughout our curriculum. We will provide the children with a range of exciting and memorable learning experiences to develop their interpersonal skills, build resilience and allow them to become creative and critical thinkers with high aspirations.
We aim for children to be enthusiastic and have a positive attitude to learning as we provide a highly inclusive learning environment. Our staff are enthusiastic, positive and approachable, in return we expect every child to try their best in all activities.
We hope every child has an enjoyable and valuable time with us and moves into Year 6 with an abundance of knowledge, skills and understanding.

Felted Viking Shields
As part of our Viking topic, we designed Viking shields. Using felting techniques, we then made the shields with the help of local artist Julie Harrison.
Moorforge Viking Visit
On 28/1/2020 Oak class visited Moorforge Viking Settlement just outside of Gilcrux. We spent time in the longhouse around the fire hearing stories of the Norse Gods and also got to visit the forge and the willow copice. We looked at viking artefacts, had a go at grinding wheat to make flour, played Viking board games and also 'made' viking coins.
On 13/11/19, Year 5 had a visit from Sarah who works for the Lake District National Park. Sarah taught the children all about the water cycle and, using maps of the Lake District, how the National Park are working with United Utilities to save and improve water supplies.
