Welcome to Aspen class- Reception and Year One. I am looking forward to getting to know you and working together so that we have a very exciting and productive year. I hope that you enjoy the new challenges and approaches to learning that Reception and Year 1 has to offer!
Our aim is to ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One. The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception, the class will continue to develop their basic skills in all areas of learning. Learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day, and the children will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners. Please don’t hesitate to come and see me either before or after school if you have any questions or queries.
Reading in Reception and Year 1...
Your child will visit our Infant library each week to choose a book suitable for reading for pleasure with an adult at home. These can be returned to school in your child’s book bag ready to be swapped over. In normal circumstances, parents are welcome to visit our library to exchange books each morning, however with the Covid-19 restrictions in place, school staff will take responsibility for this.
As your child progresses through the Read Write Inc phonics programme, we will send home books to practise blending and reading at home matched to your child’s reading ability. These will be changed every 3 days, in line with the scheme.
- The children will be doing PE on Mondays (Year 1) and Fridays. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school and that all items are clearly labelled. We encourage children to practise getting dressed at home to help them get changed quickly in school!
- Any letters or reply slips, which need to be returned, can be put in your child’s book bag. The children are encouraged to check them each morning and give things in during registration time.
- The children are welcome to bring a water bottle from home to access throughout the day.
